"How much does it cost?" Because it is the wrong approach to plastic surgery

Dr. Luca Piombino

Some of the questions I get asked more and more often, especially on my channels
social media, are “how much does it cost?”, “price?” or “transaction amount?”, often without having
not even read the message I intended to communicate or without introducing myself and saying hello!

Although I understand the need to know the cost of an intervention, to evaluate whether it is possible
fall within the expenses that a person is able to bear, they are absolutely
against this approach to plastic surgery, to reducing a complex discipline to
a mere price list.

Plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery is a serious subject, not a sale item,
which involves years of studies, specializations and improvement. The Plastic surgeon è
a doctor who, after obtaining a degree in Medicine and Surgery, carries out a course
of specialist training for a further 5 years in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
The title of Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery requires at least 7200
approximately hours of training and participation in thousands of surgical operations.

The first question anyone interested in undergoing surgery should ask themselves
it should be if the plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon you are relying on is
sufficiently prepared and competent, not how much the intervention costs. The choice should
be dictated by the surgeon's reliability and experience, certainly not by chasing the
downward price.

The cost of each operation is not only given by the doctor's experience but also by
clinic in which he works and his team.
An operation that requires a greater number of hours in the operating room or hospitalization
one night will cost more than an operation that can be performed in
day hospital. A trained team is preparatory to the success of a surgical operation
(I am thinking of the role of the anesthetist, who deals with pain control and treatment of
patient before, during and after surgery, as well as the importance
of the assistant in the theater or the surgical attendant).

Another part of the costs is the equipment used, which must always be
updated and cutting edge. A simple example could be the prostheses that are
they insert during a breast augmentation. There are all types of prostheses on the market
price range and every quality level. Clearly their choice affects the price
final result of a breast augmentation as well as their quality affects the final result
of the surgery: the better the implants, the more natural and beautiful the breasts will be.

In addition to these more technical aspects, in order to create a realistic cost estimate, it goes
assessed the starting situation of each patient. To be able to consider an intervention
surgery, whatever it is, it is necessary to undergo one visit accurate, so that
the plastic surgeon can examine the patient's baseline, his physiognomy and
body size, determine if there are any complexities or issues, and design accordingly
the most suitable intervention also in light of the patient's needs and requests.

Often, thanks to a visit, it may emerge that the patient does not need it at all
undergo the operation you think of or that the most suitable procedure for your case is completely different.

Only in this way is plastic surgery not reduced to a simple "open and close"
but it becomes a real design studied in every detail on the body and
on the patient's requests, in order to choose the most suitable technique or, possibly,
combine several together.

This is why I advise you to be wary of unrealistic prices or super offers in the sector
surgical. Precarious health conditions can hide behind prices that are too low
during the execution of the intervention, the absence of suitable or adequate equipment
preparation by the doctor, conditions that can compromise the result
of the intervention and put the patient's health at risk.

It is essential to choose a skilled and trained plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon,
with experience and a sufficient series of interventions to be able to guarantee valid results and
lasting over time. A poorly performed surgery could be very difficult to perform
correct later, which is why it is necessary to rely on expert hands.
