Focus on the eyes: when to resort to blepharoplasty for aesthetic purposes

Focus Eyes

The eyes, which have always been considered the mirror of the soul, today represent the point of maximum attraction of the face, especially since masks that cover half the face are worn. A tired, dull or heavy look can create discomfort and embarrassment and more and more patients are resorting to cosmetic eyelid surgery, a series of operations aimed at improving the harmony of the eyes, in order to make the gaze more open and the face younger.

La blepharoplasty is an operation that consists of the surgical removal of excess skin and/or fat located in the eyelids and can be top, lower o interest both, based on the area subject to intervention.

As the years pass, the upper eyelids are subject to aging and laxity, a condition that can lead to ptosis of the eyelid tissues (moderate or severe) or, in more serious cases, to an excess of skin that compromises visual ability.
Ptosis of the eyelids, not to be confused with ptosis of the eyebrow since they are two different anatomical areas, can also derive from congenital factors and not related to aging, therefore presenting at a young age.

Another blemish that makes the look less seductive is the classic bags under the eyes, a blemish often complained about by patients visiting the practice. As we age, the cheeks become empty, accentuating the indentation of the tear trough, the tear trough, with the consequent increase in dark circles.

To overcome this defect and make the face more relaxed it is possible to use one lower blepharoplasty, an incision in the sub-ciliary edge of the eyelid to reshape the fat bags and excess skin that cause the blemish. Thanks to an accurate surgical technique it is also possible to reposition part of the excess fat in order to correct the depression of the tear trough, filling the empty space.

Both operations have an average duration of 90 minutes and take place under local anesthesia with sedation. Thanks to the analgesic effect of this anesthesia, operations are painless both during their execution and post-operatively.

Where necessary, upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty can be associated with each other, in this case we speak of complete blepharoplasty. These interventions are aimed at rejuvenating the face and brightening the look but have no effect on wrinkles or ptosis of the eyebrow, a blemish for which different interventions are recommended, such as an eyebrow lift.

The choice of the type of operation can only be assessed through a thorough visit, in order to plan the operation in an optimal way and choose the most suitable technique, possibly combining the upper and lower blepharoplasty operations together.
